The contribution of macroalgae‐associated fishes to small‐scale tropical reef fisheries

چکیده

Macroalgae-dominated reefs are a prominent habitat in tropical seascapes that support diversity of fishes, including fishery target species. To what extent, then, do macroalgal habitats contribute to small-scale reef fisheries? address this question we: (1) Quantified the macroalgae-associated fish component catches from 133 fisheries, (2) Compared life-history traits relevant fishing (e.g. growth, longevity) and coral-associated (3) Examined how species can influence catch diversity, trophic level vulnerability (4) Explored fisheries change with expansion using case study fishery-independent data for Seychelles. Fish utilised comprise 24% catch, but very few fished relied entirely on or coral post-settlement. Macroalgal fishes had similar traits, although declined increasing contribution macroalgae association whilst mean peaked when macroalgal-associated accounted 20%–30% catches. The Seychelles revealed total biomass reefs, primary increased as cover expanded. Our findings reinforce multiple types needed stability sustainability. Whilst have been focus management, we show potential size ways reduce overfishing. This is pertinent where repeated disturbances facilitating replacement habitats.

Ecological speciation in tropical reef fishes.

The high biodiversity in tropical seas provides a long-standing challenge to allopatric speciation models. Physical barriers are few in the ocean and larval dispersal is often extensive, a combination that should reduce opportunities for speciation. Yet coral reefs are among the most species-rich habitats in the world, indicating evolutionary processes beyond conventional allopatry. In a survey...

contribution of setting to the study of characters and the main idea in e. brontes: wuthering heights and t. hardys: return of the native.

this thesis aims to adduce an unmitigated and comprehensive explication concerning the relationship of three significant elements of fiction: setting, chracter and theme. my research is basically placed on two outstanding novels of the 19th century: emily brontes wuthering heights and thomas hardys return of the native. my endeavour lies in studying the correlation among the three above-mention...

Tropical Fishes Dominate Temperate Reef Fish Communities within Western Japan

Climate change is resulting in rapid poleward shifts in the geographical distribution of tropical and subtropical fish species. We can expect that such range shifts are likely to be limited by species-specific resource requirements, with temperate rocky reefs potentially lacking a range of settlement substrates or specific dietary components important in structuring the settlement and success o...

Empirical Evidence of Fisheries Sub-Sector’s Contribution to the Nigerian Economy

The study examined relationship between the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Nigeria with the inputs of labour, capital and the output of fisheries. This is to ascertain that the fisheries contribution to the economy is more than is recorded in the sense that taking its indirect and direct economic impact into account, its overall contribution to the GDP of Nigeria may be higher than that measur...

Attraction of settlement-stage coral reef fishes to reef noise

We compared catches of settlement-stage reef fishes in light traps attached to underwater speakers playing reef sounds with those of silent traps during a summer recruitment season at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Of the total 40191 reef fishes we collected, significantly more (67%; Wilcoxon and Binomial tests: p< 0.001) appeared in the traps with broadcast reef noise. Traps dep...
